When the arrival of a newborn baby is imminent, the last thing on the minds of Mom and Dad is baby health insurance. So much consideration is given to buying tangible necessities like nursery furniture and baby clothing, that little thought is given to that of the baby´s health care. Unfortunately, that should be at the very top of the list because childhood illnesses are common and out-of-pocket medical expenses add up quite quickly. Choosing the right plan with an appropriate coverage will take careful planning and it may require that you get quotes from a variety of insurance companies in order to find a plan that meets both your financial and medical requirements.
Adding Baby Health Insurance to an Existing Plan
There are times when Mom and Dad are already covered by an existing health care plan and adding a baby might seem like the logical thing to do. Many times this might be a wise choice, but there are also times when coverage might not be sufficient and/or the rise in premiums might not make sense financially. If the rate is significantly higher, there is always the option to shop around for a plan that has all the coverage that your baby will require at a more affordable rate.
When considering baby health insurance it is imperative that parents be apprised of all the coverage that might be needed. While it is unimaginable to think that your child might need a hospital stay, at some point this might become necessary. Most new parents are overwhelmed with the great responsibility that they have been given and just do not stop to plan for all the contingencies. While they may be aware of the need for the general coverage that would take care of routine check-ups and immunizations, many new parents aren’t aware of the need to plan for major medical situations. It is not uncommon for babies to become dehydrated when running high fevers and IV rehydration therapy is often required. Sometimes this necessitates an overnight in-hospital stay which could and often does cost several thousands of dollars.
HMO and a PPO
One of the most common errors that new parents make when choosing baby health insurance is in choosing a plan that will not cover visits to the pediatrician of their choice. While there are many similarities between an HMO (health maintenance organization) and a PPO (preferred provider organization) there are also some crucial differences. If there is a specific pediatrician you would like to care for your newborn, it is essential to discuss with him/her (prior to binding a policy) which insurance providers are accepted at that office. A PPO insurance plan offers more flexibility in choice of doctors so this might be a better option if the choice of pediatrician is non-negotiable. Weigh all options carefully prior to making the final decision and your baby’s health will be well provided for.
