    Pregnancy Health Insurance

Every woman dreams of conceiving a baby at one point or another. This often denotes responsibility and requires planning for circumstances that can become difficult. In order to be responsible, it is necessary to act accordingly and take actions which are going to be beneficial in the long run, one of them being the purchase of a pregnancy health insurance plan. It is common to assume that with an addition of a new member to the house, the expenditure is bound to increase. However, in the case of pregnancy, pre-natal care is both important for the mother and baby but also expensive.

    Why is it Required?

The most critical times during a pregnancy period are the last 3 months. Assuming a normal cycle of 9 months, in the first 6 months the woman can carry on with her day to day activities and attend her works which would ensure regular income. During the last 3 months before conceiving and 3 months after it, the woman is recommended complete bed rest which eventually leads to the reduction in income; added to this is the proportional increase in the expenditure, thus making pregnancy health insurance very important to meet financial needs. Expenses to consider include hospital bills which can amount to $20,000 in exceptional cases.

Problems Faced while Buying Pregnancy Health Insurance

A large number of insurance companies do not cover this form of insurance in their service and those who do, add a significant amount of premium against it on the total insurance cost. Several reasons for this include categorizing it under a pre-existing condition, a clause which allows the agency to not cover it for a maximum period of 12 months. The department of law has been trying to bridge this gap but several loopholes exist which are constantly exploited by the health insurance agencies. This has lead to a large number of women (close to 15%) living without such a cover.

    Reasons for Respite

Fortunately, there are alternate measures to consider in regards to pregnancy health insurance which can be obtained by those who have not been successful with the agencies. Pregnancy health insurance may be covered under the COBRA plans but can be a costly affair. A couple of states offer schemes such as Medi-Cal in California along with others like the federally sponsored Medicaid. The low income groups can profit the most from these two as they are specially designed for families on a budget.

In an ideal situation, this cover should be a part of the regular health insurance coverage but is often excluded. Subject to this reason, proper planning is advised before a woman tries to get pregnant. Inadequate funds leading to inadequate care can deteriorate the health of the mother as well as that of the child in her womb. By having an adequate pregnancy health insurance policy, these difficulties can be avoided.
